The North Shore Animal League America, the world's largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, declared August 1st as a birthday for all the shelter animals whose birthdays are unknown. So......Happy DOGust, and hope the many dogs in our Animal shelters find happy homes this month! Speaking of adoption and rescue, I am so impressed with so many agencies, Friends on Facebook, TV shows like Home & Family who are doing dog adoptions daily, and many of the news stations showing a dog or cat once a week to bring awareness to this issue so it always stays fresh in everyone's mind. We have come a long way-but there are still lots of dogs and cats that need to find homes. There are so many ways you can help, contribute, donate, or give quality time, and something I am personally making a priority this year. As you know-Josie was thrown in a garbage dumpster at a gas station with other dogs, and might have ended up in a shelter for awhile since she was black.......good thing I never knew anything about the color of a dog and adoption -I just immediately fell in love. Made sense though that all the yellow pups that were with Josie had been adopted the next day, and she was still left there. Check out organizations like //bestfriends.org/ in Los Angeles. I have no affiliation, but they do great things.
August is also host to National Dog Day -and let's face it for many of us-our dogs are celebrated daily! It's nice to have an extra day to post more pictures of the fur kid-but anytime we can bring awareness to Pet's I say-I'm in! One thing I was made aware of in August is that one of my favorite summer treats- Watermelon, is actually both safe and healthy food for your dog to consume too. And it's not just a tasty snack, it's healthy too. A watermelon is like a giant health-bomb! It's low in calories and packed with nutrients, like potassium, beta-carotene, and magnesium. It also contains vitamins A, B6, and C, and helps boost immune system health. The sweet melon also packs plenty of water, making it a hydrating treat for pups-you just need to be aware that the seeds and rind are a No No! You can also freeze some of the watermelon which is great to take with you to a park as well for your pup.
I am loving my monthly journeys with Josie and //www.dogtipper.com/fun/pet-holidays is a great website to go to and check out fun pet holidays and give you monthly reminders of some of the things you should be putting on your calendar to take care of, or celebrate each month. Josie is truly my lil blessing and so grateful for all the new friends she has brought into my life-making fur friends daily and human ones too!
Always try to adopt or rescue when pawsible,
Happy DOGust & Watermelon?
